Well I have had the worst luck with transmissions latley I just got a 86 f series half ton with 5.8 and a C6 I drained the trans fluid put in a new filter and vacum modulator valve and it wont shift out of first? When I shift it into reverse or second it works but it doesn't shift on it's own. the vacum line is good and the fluid level is correct any help????????
Did you hook the vaccume lines up correctly? I effing hate vaccume stuff, because it's such a pita to trace down... I'd check for lines that got broken, disconnected, or just look bad to begin with.
How did the fluid look when you took it out? Metal/fiber shavings?
I did replace the filter and the knockout plug was still in the pan . I have never seen such a cleaner pan and it seems that I was the first person ever in that pan no shavings no burnt fluid. I've heard that the governor will stick and cause it to not shift but Im not sure how to fix the problem and where the gov. is located any help. On a budget ....
I believe there is a rod behind the vacuum modulator that the modulator connects to. Did you notice it when you changed the modulator? Make sure it is connected, or it won't shift on its own. Check and make sure that you don't have the modulator adjusted incorrectly either. If the screw is set too far in, you would really have to get the engine revs up high for it to shift. Keep us posted

The pushrod in the modulator is there and I did adjust the valve each way to see what would happen. I wa stold that the governor can stick and cause it not to shift but where is it and what does it look like and how do you test it? Any help?
