I have a problem. I am trying to put a 302 motor in my ranger. A guy I know gave me a motor from his junk yard he tells me it runs and it will work. I took it home and started cleaning it up. The top of the block has 289 on it my dad says he thinks it is a 289. It looks like a 302 to me the only numbers I can find on it are D4DE-6015-BA. Now I read a thread from a guy named Jeff on here he had the same numbers on his motor and didn't know what it was if anyone can help me out that would be great. Also the tag above those numbers says 7822. Thanx.

Somehow you have stumbled across the User Introduction forum.
You need the V90* Engine Tech/discussion forum
I'll have this thread moved there

They stopped making the 289 in 1968.
A 302 should have a A as the 3rd character.
ie: D4AE
BUT,
That 302 block you have was designed for a 1974 Maverick
unless that is a 4 instead of a 7
and was cast on February 22, 1977 (That 8 is actually a B)
in which case it means it was cast put in a 77 Granada 302.
If I were you, I'd bring that 302 back and get a later model one from one of the following vehicles : V8 Explorer/Mountaineer, this one fits the best in a Ranger, actually a bolt in, plug in swap, if you have a 98-up Ranger. Next is the 94-94 Stang or mid 90's T-Bird/Cougar (pre mod motor) This one fits good too, it's not the width that you have to deal with, it's the overall length. All the above have shorter front accessories. After these any 5.0 from either a Stang/Capri or a Lincoln Mark VII works ( this is the GT/HO 5.0.) Then one from a 80's-up Crown Vic, Lincoln Town car, and Merc Marquis works. Most of these have the dual sump oil pan you need for the swap, excepting the Explorer motor, but if you have a 98 up Ranger, that's not an issue. There's lots more to add, more than I can type. Go to one of the V8 Ranger sites for more info. I've had a V8 in my 89 Ranger for 5 years now.
