We just got a new-to-us 2005 Expedition with 4k miles on it a couple of weeks ago. My wife put it into park while sitting on a slight incline at the barn and hopped out. The truck rolled down the hill and hit a trailer taking out the left front fender.<ouch>
Afterwards, when she got back in the truck, she had to pull it out of park (with witnesses around) to shift it into Reverse (to back it out of the trailer.) Also, the air bags didn't deploy even though it hit it at a pretty good clip nor did the automatic door locks lock.
So, my question is, is this a common problem with Expeditions and how do I go about trying to get Ford to cover what appears to be a problem with the transmisison?
Was the parking brake on or off at the time the truck rolled? I know the older trucks has a tendency to pop out of park but not the new ones. Perhaps although the column shifter was locked (as evidenced by having to move the lever from the 'Park' position) but the linkage did not actually have the parking pawl engaged. Does it stay in park now?

The parking brake was not on and I don't really know if it stays in park well now. I haven't been in it since the accident. The driver's door won't open due to the fender being pushed back.
We had it towed to the Ford dealer where we bought it but they of course said that they looked at it and all the linkages looked okay. No big surprise there.
So, now it's at a highly-recommended body shop that also happens to be sanctioned by our insurance carrier, State Farm. SF is supposed to be sending someone to look at it. I guess my only option is to let them and Ford fight it out.<sigh>
New generation air bags will not deploy if the truck does not sense that someone is in the seat. For instance, the driver's bag will deploy if it's a driver only accident but the passenger air bag will not.
My 06 would appear to be in park when it was not, had something to do with the indicator, the key would not come out so it was not an issue.
mtcox is correct, the airbags will not deploy if there is not enough weight in the seat. Before we got the 06 Expd, we had a 02 SuperCrew that was hit from the rear and driven into the car in front. My wife "stood up on the brake" because she saw it coming. The airbag did not deploy due to no weight being seen in seat and the fact the truck was stopped prior to being hit. I've been told by Ford, the computer looks at; speed, weight in the seat, seat belts, etc.. before deployment a lot of things in just millisecond.
It's gone from bad to worse. The body shop called to let us know that the original repair from the previous owner's "fender bender" wasn't properly done.
The dealer we bought the car from was also the one that performed these repairs. They had told us up front about the prior accident and showed us the repair order. We thought everything was okay but apparently NOT. They want me to come over so they can show me what was not properly done.
I'll now have to confront the dealer on this. It just makes the whole mess that much messier.<argh>
Well, at least we've discovered that the repair wasn't properly done and it will now be corrected.
