OK gent's, put on your thinkning caps and help me defrag this intermitent starting problem.
On two occasions I have tried to start the truck after driving and nothing happened. The key turned, the dash lights all worked but there was no sound at all and no starter function. No click of starter trying to turn, no fuel pump or other engine sounds. Nothing.
The first time, I had to call road service and had the truck towed to a dealer. Next morning the service went out to work on the truck and it started right up. That was about two months ago and in the interum truck worked fine.
Two days ago I pulled off the highway to fill up and it happened again. I was in the fuel lane. Shut down, filled up and tried to start. Absolutly nothing. About an hour later, after sitting there blocking the lane I tried to start and it lit right up.
Anyone know what part of the system between the key and the starter might be effected by heat and disrupt the completion of the signal?
Best guess is part of the security system - if it malfunctions, it may reset after sitting. I remember that a lot of older Fords had trouble with heat related failure of the TFI module, but that's a thing of the past. For the most part, the engineers put a lot of consideration into heat protection for electrical parts.
The PATS security setup interrogates the ignition key when you try to start the truck, and it will not allow power to the starter if it thinks the key is bogus, or if it has an intermittant problem.
Does the security light flash when you get the no-start condition?
I'll have to find out where the "security light" is located but I did not notice any unusual lights flashing when this happened - just the normal dash lights that go on and off. Do you think juggling the key in the ignition or turning the key over 180 degrees and inserting it will do anything? The agrivating part is the failure isn't repeatable so I can show the local tech's what the problem is.
Come to think of it, this never happened befor I had the FOMOCO remote starter installed. Wonder if the truck would start that way if it won't respond to the ignition/key normal way???

There is no PATS system in the superduties. The remote starter does have a starter kill relay. Next time it won't start with the key try unlocking the doors with the remote starter button and then start with the key. If that doesn't work start it with remote starter. Could also be the neutral safety switch.
Oops...no PATS on the Superduty? Well, I guess I can't claim to be part of that club!
The remote starter setup sounds suspicious - any electrical items installed after the truck left the factory are suspect when a problem crops up.
My did the same thing today. Would not start on click, but i had all the lights,& radio work. I put in park all the way and it start right up. (I think it was having a Chevy Problem).
