Installing Pertronix Conversion
Just got my kit yesterday (i've been running points for 21 years in 3 different Ford trucks, guess I'm a slow learner), and was
looking at the instuction sheet and determined that I have a resistance wire in the primary circuit, my question is: what and where is the shortest/best switched ignition lead? I was thinking about running a wire to the switch, but I hate loose/extra wires under the dash (have too many now ie: tach, gages, in/out thermometer, trailer brake controller, etc. all have their own harness, but it's getting crowded down there) Enough rambling on...Mike
I cannot help with the wire question but ! I did this same upgrade in the spring and boy what a diference. Definetly go with the hotter coil and larger plug wires. I also opened the gap on the plugs and then played with timing and carbuerator adjustment. Things are pretty good and are simply improved. Best of luck, Greg

Installing Pertronix Conversion

Mike:

I just finished installing the kit on my 68 390. I did not have the resistor, though, so all i had to do was install the 'red' ignitor wire to the positive side of the coil. as a result, had to get a coil with some internal resistance.

i haven't seen the resistor setup, but i am imagining that it is inline with your iginition lead and then goes to the positive lead of your coil. my understanding of the petronix instructions was all you would do is splice the ignitor red wire onto the ignition wire right before it gets to the resistor coming from the ignition side.

don't forget to keep the old distrib ground wire screwed in inside the cap.

Switched 12V is on a green wire with a red stripe that runs from the switch to the voltage regulator (terminal S, I believe). It runs thru a square 4-wire connector that hangs off the inside fender well just below (and maybe a little behind) the battery. Other wires in the connector are two yellows and a BIG black one with a yellow stripe. I spliced in just above this connector to run mine. To be honest, I suspect the reduced voltage from the resistor wire would work fine, but this one was close enough that I just used it.

And amen to the other praises of the Pertronix Ignitor. My truck just can't wait for me to start it up every morning.
