Hello everyone, a friend on mine as a 98 4wd Ranger that is making a squeaking noise that sounds like its coming from the front wheels. I've paid attention and have seen and heard that other rangers do this. Is this a common event? What might it be, and what can be done to get rid of the noise?
He also has a clunking noise coming from his tranny when starting from a stop. I checked his ujoints and none had play, but then again, every ford car or truck I've ever owned always clunked a lil from a stop. So I figure its really nothing to worry about.
Just looking for some input, cause my friend would like me to fix it. lol
Can you associate the squeaking at the front wheels with anything? Turning, braking, accelerating, going over bumps, etc? Can you make the noise happen by pushing down on the bumper to bounce the truck? These details will help you (and us) narrow it down to brakes, driveline, ball joints, etc.
The clunking in the tranny may be the slip yoke that many people have reported on these trucks. It can usually be fixed by greasing it.

The squeaking is very similar to that of a squeaking u-joint. But... its obviously apparent that it is from the front wheels. It squeaks on acceleration, and no noise on breaking... which to me felt it wasnt brakes then. So... thats kinda why I was asking
