Forget truck three speeds if you are going racing.
The all synchro "303" was put in cars as well in the '60s. Not sure when production stopped.
It has a big gap between 2nd and 3rd, which is pretty standard for 3 speeds. If you found one from a Mustang it might bolt in, but it's pretty lame as transmissions go in this day of 5 and 6 speeds and with the advances made in automatics.
Find a late model T5 from a V8 Mustang and go with that if you go manual.
As far as ratios go, T5s even in V8 Mustangs had several spreads. Most have a lower first than the 3 gear, and 2-3-4 are more evenly spaced, and in all 5th is overdrive.
If you are drag racing, a C4 automatic, built to racing strength might be your answer.
Now, if you are so strapped for funds that all you can afford is an old truck 3 speed, then you should not go racing. Go buy food for the kids and shoes for the wife.
I am strapped for funds because i am sixteen and the class i am going to run in this year only alows for a 3 speed or i would use the trans thats is in the car right now i am running a stickly stock on a local circle track
Yea, I did go to college and I wasted a fair amount of money on car and motorcycle junk in my day. Both were considerably cheaper in those days, and despite what you say, nothing is free today, no matter who you know.
Yea, it's fun to do all this, but priorities should be set. If you like it, get the education (which who's to say, you may be planning to do anyway...) and then you can get a good job and AFFORD to race in a class that doesn't force you to put a 3 speed in a '83 Mustang.
Car guy or truck guy, I want to see people elevate themselves so they can contribute something to the future of the country. Aim high(er).
