2 stroke exhaust

I know you cant run a 4 stroke without enough exhaust due to burning up exhaust valves, but can you run a 2 stoke with a short exhaust, like a 2 cylinder going into one pipe, with a foot of pipe on it?

most of the time no, because a 2 stroke needs back pressure to run, unlike a 4 stroke where back pressure bogs a motor down

I am going to disagree with tom as if you have ever saw a old chainsaw 30+yrs or older they had no muffler and I have run plenty of dirt bikes with out one when I was a kid (they loved me for that),but the size and shape of the pipe matters as on how and when the power curve comes in,thats why one of the first upgrades people make to a 2 cycle motorcycle is the pipe and jetting. If you run with a open pipe you will lose a lot of low end power.Being a 2 cylinder you want a pipe as close to the same as you can get for each cylinder and then bring them into one muffler but two would be better.

well i took a 440gp snowmobile engine, and put it on my oddessy. the exhaust exits towards the driver, and im trying to figure out what im going to have to do with my exhaust. it will start and seem to run just fine with the pipe off of it and just the collector, but i wanted to check.

2 smokes will run without a pipe, they just won't make as much horsepower as they are capable of. Without one, they'll still make power but you won't exactly be impressed by them. The exhaust system is a very important ingredient in making their power.

i should have been clearer with my answer. as wiseguy said, they will run without pipes, but they rely on backpressure to run properly. you do not need to use the stock pipe configuration, you can cut them to fit. but use the expansion chamber. that is what gives it it's power.
