well I got an 86 ranger that I have put a 90ish 5.0 engine into, and converted the engine to a carb setup... c-4 transmission, msd ignition...
I added a holley mechanical 600cfm carb and hooked up a ford closed crank case breather to the valve cover, and hooked that to the port on the back of the carb. I dont have a cap or breather for the drivers side oil fill on the valve cover(at this time)... WHEN I started the truck up i couldnt get it to idle correct,or get rid of the annoying vacum like wistle until I placed my hand over the open oil fill (mind you it felt like I was gonna get sucked in)...
Im not sure that I understand the importance of a closed crank case or its necessity ... can some one explain....
should I be running the crank case hose to the carb... or should I be running a breather, with a cap for the oil fill .. and plug the back of the carb..
or should I be using the closed crank case assembly with a oil cap, or a breather...
The closed crankcase breather than you have should hook up to the breather element in the air filter assembly, with a PCV valve hooked to the carb vacuum port as mhg said. The difference between open and closed is closed goes to the air filter housing like would come from the factory, and an open system just has an open air filter on the fresh air side.
There should be a PCV valve in one valve cover with both an open and closed setup. The carb vacuum port will hook to the PCV valve in both cases. In the other valve cover, an open system would have the K&N style filter, whereas a closed type system would connect to the stock breather filter element in the air filter housing. The breather (either closed or the open K&N) usually tops the oil fill hole.
