Belt screeching

Now not only do I have a rattle @ 2500rpms but I have a belt that squeaks. Both these problems go away 15-20 mins of driving but I want to know why and how I can figure out what belt it is and whats wrong???? Can anyone help me out???

Thanks
greg

I'm not sure what year or motor you have, but I assume you only have one belt... the serpentine belt. I suggest taking it off and inspecting it and replace if necessary. While it's off, spin each pulley to see if there is any unusual drag or noise on/in it. Pay particlular attention to the idler pulley.

THe belt will stop screeching after a time because it warms up. Once it does so it will grab on to the pulleys better. Quick fix is to spray some belt dressing on it. Better is to tighten it properly or even replace it. Belts get a glaze on them after awhile.

Spikedog thanks for the post. I did use baby powder and that worked also. I cant tighten it I would have to replace it but I just bought the truck and the belt was replaced. I think it is something more serious though because I would get a rattle sound only @2400 rpms and now I get this belt sound, thing is they go away once the engine warms up??? I am guessing but it could be my tensioners???

Thanks
