Not to mention that objects float by displacing their own weight in water. There are two bridges (maybe three) near here that are floating concrete boxes. Steel is much heavier per cubic foot than concrete, yet 99% of all commercial and military vessels are steel. It's just a matter of how much water they displace.
True, but their overall density still has to be less than that of the water they are displacing. A solid block of "normal" concrete or steel won't float.
I just happen to have a ferro-cement 38' sailboat. It was built in Florida in 1979, sailed through the Panama Canal, and has been to Auz, NZ and the pacific islands. She now is moored in Boardman Or, on the Columbia River. In 1999 it came loose in a storm and slamed into the "rip-rap" breakwater and we could'nt get at it for 36hrs. The only damage was to the paint, It scratched the concrete very little! That concrete skin is tough, any other fiberglass boat would have been distroyed. It has no "keel" like most sailboats so I can sail in as little as 3' of water, BUT.....I'ts slooow. She weighs 44,000 lbs! It's a great way to releive stress!
A 3' draft, whats it got a swing keel? Kind of like my friends Engilman (sp) ketch I believe at 38' with full running gear. Under sail you feel like your sailing the BOUNTY.
sierraben; what's this Yerba Buena stuff, you get a "Willie Brown sneaky housing deal" for low income with that million dollar view in the center of the bay?

we have a 75 foot party fishing boat here in nj named the miss carolanne shes cement guys been floating now for 30 years making money every good day it goes out.
the shape displaces the water just like a reg. boat out of fiber glass . it's been done for many years. as far as how many are floating made of it. many as many are home built sail boats as above.
It would of been better if "slick Willie" went to Oakland and "Moon Beam" to San Francisco. I worked on the Posey / Webster tunnel job 3 1/2 years, 1 1/2 blocks from Ozone man and spoke to him many times. You look into his eyes, "lights on no ones home". Been told his dad was just as goofy.
Time for a Curve Ball and listen to Dr. Wobblebrain on 810 at 10:00.
What about one of those 3 tier 15 gallon brew systems? Scratch build w/ electric heating.

As my friend always said, "are you stupid or you take drugs to get that way?"
I think we need Nader in Sacramento.
Is that a home brew starter kit you ordered?
The civil engineering dept. of the school i go to competes in these events. They also do mini bridge comperitions. Here is a link to their website. http://ceserver.lamar.edu/CEChapter/ASCE/index.html
Lamar's CE department is the most active among the different engr. fields.
"Beemer Nut", actually I have a buddy who might sell/give me his brew kit, since he and his girlfriend just bought a bar. I'll have to check it out.
I think what we need is a North California and a South California. Arnold in the South and Nader in the North.
ckrichard, you have to have brains to be a CE. Counts me out.
A concrete canoe; wow. Must weigh a few pounds.
And how do they get it float 6" out of water after submerging it?
Sierraben I am studing to be a Mechanical Engineer. I have friends that are studing to be CE, and just know about it. They show off the canoe and bridge every once in a while on campus. From what i have heard is that it is heavy, but it is a good bit lighter than it actually looks.
Yup a lightweight 14' concrete canoe, only weighs 642 pounds. I can see it now on a Honda Civic roof rack, Berkeley anyone?
You got my vote with Southern California (Mexifornia) the 51 state and we keep the water.
add to your list beemer .here in new jersey we have the same problem. only the langage is a problem as it's a mix of spanish and aribic. how could we name that. and spilt the state into 3.
