Gas Guage Malfunction

Gas Guage Malfunction
Just wondering if anyone else has gas guage problems. The last two fill-ups I've done the guage stays stuck where it was before I filled the tank. Today I was down to 1/4 and filled it full. The guage just stays there. Turn the truck off then back on and the guage doesn't move. Drive several miles home, still no movement. Get into the garage, turn the truck off and then back on and the guage resets to show full. Not sure where I should look yet to solve this problem. This is the second time that it has happened.
I am fueling the truck with the engine shut off.
No problems with any of the other guages.

happened to me a few times too...but I think it has been because I don't take the time to turn the key forward for a second or 2 before starting it...since the last time I do this all the time now..and there has been no reoccurance...must be the computer needing to sense it before it is put to work.,.....??

My old Mazda/Ranger did the same thing for about 10k and then stopped working completely.
Dealer suggested it was the sending unit. I didn't think to look for a problem with the gauge cluster. Finding the problem will probably involve putting a meter on the gauge or fuel sending unit while the poblem is occurring. Don't know for sure without finding my manual-now where did that thing go?
The fuel gauge sending unit is in the gas tank. So if that part goes bad in might be a pain and expensive to fix. Unless you can drop the gas tank to fix/replace it yourself. I think the quote I got was upwards of $400- not comletely sure but it was more than I wanted to pay at the time.
I drove without a gas gauge for about 3 years, 80K+(never did get it fixed- vehicle was stolen). I would make sure to reset the trip meter every time I got gas and was then able to calculate, based on driving style(city, hiway, leadfoot), how far I could go on that tank. Significantly reduced the stress of not knowing how much gas I had left. Took the wife a while to get used to it. Although it worked to my advantage as she would offer to buy gas just to be sure it had gas when she would ride in it.
