I work at a used car dealership and the owner bought a 04 f-350 dually 4x4 new, it now has 24k miles on it. It has no modifications and is used primarily to pull a wedge car hauler. It has been to the dealer on at least 3 occasions with tranny complaints since new, always the same thing, it hangs in gear and doesn`t want to upshift out of second and after a while BOOM!! and it shifts. It sounds and feels like someone rearended us. Also it will sometimes go into neutral and maybe coast for a hundred yards or so and BOOM again and goes into gear, usually when you are coasting off the side of the road to call a tow truck it will go in and off you go and it is fine. It has done this since it was new at times but it is doing it more often now. The local dealer has reprogrammed the transmission, checked for codes, etc. They test drive it and naturally it won`t do it for them, you never know when it`s going to act up. They are telling us that it is impossible for this transmission to do what we say it`s doing but we`ve seen it many times. It does it loaded or empty, tow haul mode or not, it will do it either way when it`s ready. Has anyone experienced this problem or have any suggestions? Sometimes we`re a long way from home in this thing, too far to walk anyway!! Thanks
most generally with the torqueshift, it has been shift solenoid issues. The early ones(03-04) there was a supplier problem. You could install solenoids and have a 50-50 chance of having a good one. If it isnt showing a code, unless its doing it, it may be hard to see. They have to have a pressure gauge installed on the test port when its acting up, to diagnose which solenoid is defective.
I have exactly the same problem.
Going to another dealer Monday to see if they can fix it.
I tow a 12,000lb 38' boat, and I can't have this thing fail.
Kinda been thinking of going to a Dodge. . . . . .

Not trying to steer you away from the Dodge scene. But, DOdge has had lots of trouble with they're automatics. If I were going to buy a Dodge it would have to be a 6 Speed Manual. I have a friend with 06 2500 Dodge Cummins that has 4500 miles on it and the trans is about to go after he pulled my 30 ft enclosed. I could tell as soon as we took off that the tranny was slipping upon shifts. Three days later she was at the dealer getting a new trans. A local company that does tree trimming hauls bobcats with a 04 Dodge and after 42K the transmission is trashed. I (knock on wood) have had zero trans problems out of both of my 6.0;s and yes they are both heavily chipped and modded. I believe the Torqshift is THE BEST transmission on the market, they just have too many manufacturing errors.
offshore 1, Yes it is very frustrating, it did it to us 3 or 4 times today in about 30 miles. Changing brands isn`t an option for us, he and I both are diehard Ford men, he has 5 for his personal use and I have 4. The truck runs great except for the tranny problem. Let me know if you have any luck fixing yours. We have another appt. this week to get it checked again. JR55
