5.4L3V Engine

I've recently purchased a 06 Exp-limited to replace my 02 F-150 5.4 L that was totaled out. Both were/are 4 X 4. Three things I notice. 1) The 06 seems to idle faster and has more noise at start-up. 2) The 06 doesn’t seem to start as fast as the 02. 3) The gas mileage is a lot worse, 15.1 on the highway. My 02 got 20 on the highway. I understand the engine needs to be broken in, my 02 didn’t start getting good gas mileage until (believe it or not) around 80k. My 06 has less than 2000 on it. Is this normal for the 06 to have such a difference to the 02? <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

My '01 Expy idled smoother than the '06 I just got. Probably something to do with the fact that these new 3V engines use electonic throttle control and Ford hasn't worked all the bugs out. As far as the highway mileage, I wouldn't expect 20 mpg but 15 doesn't sound right. Get up to highway speed and hit the reset button.

My '06 is a 4x4 and it gets 17-18 mpg on the highway if I keep it at 65. I now have 13,000 miles on it. Also, when pulling my cargo trailer (maybe 2500#) the mileage on the highway is about 14-15 mpg. You'll probably do better when it's broken in, but you're not likely to see 20 unless you drop your speed to 45 or so--then you'll be a hazard on the road.

Thanks for the comments, even a 15 mpg, I wouldn't trade it! Well, unless it was for the Roush F-150! May just have to try one of them myself and leave the Expedition to the wife!

I just took a weekend trip from the hills of WV to Wash, DC and the surrounding area. Through the mountains at 65-70 up and down hills I got 15.56 mpg and on the level interstates around DC (smooth sailing at 50-60 mph, no backups) I got 17.79 mpg. These are actual miles divided by gals, not some indicated numbers. I'm satisfied for such a big vehicle.

the expy'll be quite a bit heavier than your f-150, so that'll account for some of the difference. also, the f-150 may have been geared better for highway speeds.

keep your speed low for better mpg, my expy does best between 55-65.
