I have a 1996 f-250 psd with a e4od tranny. My question is does this transmission have a lock up converter? The reason that I ask is that when I am driving and the truck shifts from 3-4 I watch the tach and don't see any rpm drop at all. Thanks for any help.
Your truck came with a lock-up converter. It's not the 3-4 shift, usually happens before the (3-4) shift. Mine happens about 35 MPH regardless of what gear it's in.
If you want to check your converter for lockup you need to get your truck up to temp and get her going 50 MPH steady speed. Lightly tap the brakes, (throttle still steady), RPM should go up 200-400. The RPM should go back down about 5 seconds after the brake is released.
turn your 4 way flashers on too. Youll notice that it will kick out. Turn the flashers off, it will go back in. Never understood why they wired it like that....

My truck does not shift out of OD with the flashers on. mmmmm?
it doesnt shift, but it unlocks the lockup. while going down the road at 60 mph, accelerate just a little. Now do the same with the 4 ways on. There is a difference. My 95, and 97 do it. I dont know about my 01. I will try it tonight to see.
Their is no connection between the 4-way flashers & the converter. 4-ways are directly controlled by switch, PCM controls T/C. However, the 4-ways and the brake on/off switch do share the same power fuse (#13) and the brake switch does affect the T/C.
so then they must have changed this is 99 in the NBS? I have two trucks that do it and one that doesnt. DANG ford for changing things to confuse me..........LOL
