Stacks

I have been thinking of putting stacks on my truck. Some people said they ran them straight and then into a 4"x4" box. they said this box works as a muffler but still makes your truck run better and I've heard it and it sounds good. Others said just run duals with two flowmaster or magnaflow muffler. What have ya'll done on your trucks?

I agree with tom you dont need a muffler with a diesel because they are quieter than gassers and you might as well run with a y-pipe and no muffler because you donot want any restriction on your exhaust.

On my 1990, I built custom stacks that attach to the headache rack for the flatbed. I used glasspacks from JC Whitney that have a 3-inch bore. Essentially, this is a straight pipe, but a trooper can't cite me for no muffler. This is an especially sweet-sounding system -- loafing at highway speeds it has a mellow rumble . . . but when I stand on it and bring the revs up, it sounds like a pro-stock car!! I used sections of heavy reinforced rubber mat as hangers so the engine can move. My y-pipe goes to a 3.5 inch straight pipe under the cab, and then splits to the stacks.

Incidentally, this made a significant improvement in low-end torque over the stock exhaust. I pull over a low pass to get to my place, and previously had to drop to 4th to hold my speed. With the stacks, I loaf over in fifth without a problem.

So are stacks somehow better than a large diameter say 3.5 single with no muffler that runs out behind the rear wheel?

My stacks are tucked tight behind the cab, and the headache rack sits back from the cab about six inches. I have stainless heat shields over the mufflers, which are hung vertically. The stacks never get hot enough that I can't touch them, however if I've been running 70 they get pretty warm.

In eastern Washington, stacks are more common -- keeps the exhaust from starting wheat fields on fire. Where I live in western Washington, I use this truck to come and go through floods. Stacks are a plus when you are pushing water with your grille (really !!)

Granted it is not a stock bed, but I like the way mine look and the bed is a dumper so that was my only option. Besides they look real good with the stainless West Coast mirrors.

Most guys running stacks on standard bed trucks install them against the front of the bed at the outside corners.

I have true duall 3" pipe w/ flowmasters running into 6" stacks. With no turbo its too loud in the cab and literally gives you headaches going 60 down the highway. But it was also the best sounding exhaust anyone ever heard in their life.

I have pics of them in my gallery.
