Hi to all, I just got my first Ford Pickup a 92 Ranger. It has a problem with the autotrans. I thought if I adjusted the bands the problem would go away but it did not. The problem is when you put the truck in overdrive the tranny slips. In all other gears it pulls strong. The last owner told me he changed the filter and fluid 2000 miles ago. If I tighten the band to make it go in overdrive it acts like a brake in reverse. Could the other owner done something wrong when he changed the filter and fluid or am I missing something. The truck has a 3.0 V6 and is two wheel drive. Please any ideas that you have on the problem send my way. I really don't want to send it to a tranny shop I know they will just want to sell me a rebuilt tranny. By the way the truck has 75,000 miles on it.
with those trans when going into rev it has to apply the overdrive band to engage rev if to tight will act like a brake, either the accumolator is bad or the band is just plain worn out
I did not know overdrive and reverse were on the same band. I just took a guess it was the bands. The tranny has two bands, one near the front and one near the middle of the housing. The one on the front must be overdrive and reverse and the one one near the middle must be for 1st 2nd and drive, is this correct? I will buy a maintenance and repair manual as soon as I can find the right one, do you have any suggestions on which manual I should buy? in the mean time how do I check the accumulator? And do you know what I should have troqued the band's to? Thanks for your help i really need it.
you can go to autozone and get a chiltons manuel, i found them to be the best. to check the accumulator there really isnt a real way to check them you have to take an oil pressure gauge to the main line port and run the vehicle just lift the wheels off the ground and be careful and watch te pressures, not really sure what the pressure specs should be but the maule will have them, but if not call a tranny shop and tell them your trans type and they should tell you
Thanks Ranger 2411 Saturday will be here soon and I will be off to the auto parts store. The last Ford I had was a 1982 Ford Mustang GT with a 302 4 speed I made that car really fast. I changed everything and I mean everything the great part was it did not have any computer controls. Fixing this Ranger and making it go fast is a new test for me. I live in Connecticut with tough emissions laws and I never had an auto tranns. My goal is to fix the tranns and go from there. Any and all help from you and the folks on this site is not only needed but appreciated.
No problem and good luck i took a 02 ranger 4x4 ext cab and put a built 351 cleveland in it and now its my new little toy, all you have to do is have a dream , and good luck
It sounds to me like you may need that rebulit tranny. On alot of the older overdrive tranny, it was easy to destory them. Like for city driving you were supost to take the overdrive off, most people would forget, and soon the overdrive would start slipping. It happened to me on an 86 t-bird. Your not supost to tow with it on either, but thats common sence. The newer ones are alot more forgiving, but those old ones are touchy. I hope it's a simple fix, but my gut tells me it's not. Good luck, and let us know what you find out. I know this is a stupid question, but was the fluid full?
Yes the fluid is full but i question what type of fluid the previous owner put in when he changed the filter and fluid. If I can't get it to work this weekend I will just have to order a rebuild kit and rebuild the tranny myself. I just can't pay the money the tranny shops want for a rebuild. Ranger 2411 a 351 in a Ranger that truck must move. Please tell me more. I have a 1985 302 with auto trans from a T-Bird how much work would it be to swap that in? It's been a long time since I have had a play toy and this truck could be just what I needed.
