Smile Door ajar light

The door ajar light on my 97 Expi stays on most of the time. This of course causes my interior lights to stay on, which also causes my battery to run down. I make sure all doors are closed which sometimes doesn't cure the problem. Does anyone have any ideas, on what I can do to correct this???

A friend of mine had teh same problem on his ranger and I think it ended up being the preasure switch in the door jamb had become dislodged or was shorting out. May want to look and see if its a simple fix, there also may be a service bulletin at the dealer about it. Good luck.

As the Link from Luxury states, WD-40 on the latches should solve your problem.

WD-40 did the trick on my '97 Expedition as well. Had the exact same problem. No more.

Thanks for the tips. I am pretty certain it is isolated in the rear door, but I lubricated all the door jams, just in case. Time will tell... Thanks again!!!!

Yep, Same for my 98. Just hosed down all of the latch mechanisms and solved the problem. Good Luck!

Am I to understand this correctly....The door pins are located in the actual latches and not seperately on the door panels or columns. I have looked high and low and cannot find them. So all I need to do is to spray the actual latch inside and that should solve the issue. I have a 97 that has been doing this for about a year and I just have gotten used to shutting down things a certain way, lol. All of this after I have been through two batteries as a result of it.

The mechanisms are as you describe. It's all in the latch assem. So just spray into the latch with the nozzle extension tube liberally and wipe down anexcess that runs out. That should do it. I have had to do it twice since Iwe bought our 98 and it's worked great. Hopefully this is all you'll need to do. Good luck!

I'm a believer!!! It has been 4 days since since I sprayed with WD-40. Not a problem all week-end. I also had been dealing with this for about a year, I even started pulling the fuse, that operates my interior lights everytime I was going to be parked for a while. I got tired of doing this, so I hinted to my son at Christmas, that I would like to have a battery charger for Christmas, so that I could keep it in my expi, in case I needed a instant boost. He listened and told his dad, and needless to say this was my Christmas present. Best present I could have gotten!!! Anyway...I highly recomend the WD-40!!!!!!! I don't know about ya'll, but my Expi is pushing 200,000 miles, and I have to get at least another year or so out of it, so I really appreciate this forum, for solving little minor things like this. I can't thank ya'll, enough!!!!

Amen to the battery charger...I bought one last year too and it has saved my butt on more than one occasion, lol. I am in construction and MANY times out in the boondocks of North Carolina after quitting time and to get ready to leave at the end of the day only to find a dead battery cause of the damn lights staying on. Thanks to everybody for the great advice. And to you tb0530, I am pushing 220,000 on my 97 expi and need to get another year of it as well.
