Hey, First off glad to be back for Honduras...what a blessed nation we are...
I seem to have short in my wiring somewhere... I went a little run down the road yesterday and everything was running well and turned in the drive and my truck shut off. I tried craking with no luck. Popped of the dist cap and put it back on and started right up. Did the same thing this morning. is it points or what?
I know this is a simple problem just can't put my hands on it.
Wade
Could very well be the coil, sounds similar to the problem. Does it seem to breakdown when accelerated?
Usually when an electrical problem occurs is when it gets hot. Take it for a good run along with a spare coil, and if it does quit on you, change the coil and see if it cures the problem.
I agree it could very well be the coil. They can short out when they get hot. Also, check the point gap. If it is too close the gap can close when the engine gets hot due to heat expansion. I had that happen to me once.
Or the coil primary wire from the coil to the distributor cap. That would be the only thing that would make sense that poppping the cap and putting it back on clears the problem. Try changing the wire.
When you say tried cranking with no luck, do you mean it would not crank or that it would crank and not start? If it would not crank, it is not your coil.
Things could be cooling off while you are tampering with the distributor cap. It may not matter what you are doing, if you are giving it time to cool. Check all your engine electrical connections to be sure they are clean and tight. It can be hard to see a bad connection from a wire to a connector due to the insulation.
Oh boy... I repalced coil, point and condinsor...she crank right up and ran for about 10 sec. then shut right back off. I then started a check of the wiring harness and found several places that are bad. Any suggestion on where to get a good quility wiring harness?
Wade, is your truck 6 volt for starters? If so lets by pass all the wire harness and see if that is where your problem lies. Follow this to the step, take a jumper wire hook it to the NEGATIVE side of the Battery, then the other end of the wire to the side of the coil that does not go to the distributor. REPEAT DO NOT HOOK IT TO THE SIDE OF THE COIL THAT GOES TO THE DISTRIBUTOR.
IF YOU DO THEN YOU WILL FRY THE POINTS. Make sure the truck is in nuetral then push the starter button. If the truck runs okay then you have eliminated this area of the coil, points etc.
Now I am presumeing that your truck is 6 volt positive ground for this test. You don't have to turn on the key you have just by passed it doing the above.
AGAIN FOLLOW THIS TO THE EXACT WAY I MENTIONED. Get back to me and let me know how you made out.
Do you want a stock replacement harness (without fuses) or a more expandable harness with fuse panel that can have accessories added (music, turn signals, power windows, alarm system, alternator, etc etc etc)?
Are you still running 6V + grd?
I tried that and it worked then I removed wire and found a naked wire just on this side of the firewall and taped it up. Thanks for all the help. Now if it shorts out again while I am on a drive I have that piece of wire in the glove box just in case.
