I have a dual exhuast on my 2.9, which sounds great when idling, but when you rev it up you can tell its a v6 from a mile away. It doesnt sound bad persay, but a v8 would be better, but whos complaining. Id say do it, whats the worst that can happen. It sound like a 4 banger? LOL
my b2 has a glasspack muffler on it..it sounds decent when idling..if it had a v8 it would sound much better..my 72 f100 has a 302 with dual flowmasters and it sounds great.probably some of the best mony i have spent on it
as for the glasspack i don't think it made any difference being a 2.9,on my 72 i noticed a big difference as soon as i left the muffler shop, more power, great sound, and alot better than the original single exhaust that was on there
I had a Flowmaster 40 series on my 2.9 and I noticed more power over the Turbo muffler I had on there before. It sounded really good at idle and when I was driving a lot of people thought I had done the 302 swap, partly because I had mine dumped before the axle which reverberated all throughout. But mine got annoying after a while. Now I'm swapping in a 5.0 and I'll be running Borla but that's a couple of months away.
I put in a flowmaster 40 on my 2.9 with 2.5in pipe sounded great all across the board i thought got real loud at freeway speeds. i'm currently rebuilding my engine and it will have a intake and headers when its running again then it will sound sweet.
I have a 84 Bronco II with a c5 tranny and flowmaster, It sounds awsome, and it gave me more power for sure. I personally think since the 2.8 is carbed it makes a great difference to put a higher flow muffler on there. I also put 2.5 pipe all the way down and removed the resinator. My truck sounds kick *** much better than stock, its got a good rumble. on the freeway my truck isnt so loud at all, about where it was stock. but low end when pushing the gas hard it sounds great and it always sets car alarms off in underground parking. I also threw a msd coil in there and increased my fuel mixture a notch on the carb. Overall i am very happy with the difference, it helped the most on my top end where the bigger pipes opened it up a bit. As far as a 2.9 I dont have any experiance. My friend has an 86 2.9 5 speed and his is loud as hell, im not sure what exaust he has on it though.
I had thought of going with a flowmaster, but my "custom" cat-back would have costed about twice as much if I had. I'm sure that flowmasters are like some of the others I've seen, if not better and do add a little more oomf. I think next on my exhaust to-do list would be something similar to this: http://www.4x4wire.com/tech/josh4x4/exhaust/ and install the single in-single out hi-flow cat I have laying around and I'll probably see that much more of a difference. Not sure yet if I really want to go with headers, although I might. *shrug*
