The 1991 F-150, X-cab, 5.8L, E4OD truck that I recently purchased seems to be coming down with a rash of problems related to the electronic controls and sensors, including but not limited to the infamous jerking transmission. The only codes so far are related to the PFE/EVP system. But, the intermittent nature of the problems - rough running, high idle in and out of gear, weird shifting (hard sometimes, too smooth to feel others) which at times show up singly at others in concert, and sometimes not at all - lead me to suspect electrical/electronic/sensor problems. Which manual gives the best coverage of what's in my truck, what it's used for, and what the symptoms of various failed sensors, ground faults, shorted circuits, etc. are?
I'm sure some of you have ended up buying all of them to try to solve this same type of problems, and I'm hoping your advice can save me some time and money by telling me which one(s) helped you the most. Also, which tools helped you the most?
the ford service manuals are what you need to get.
i use mine all the time.
Yes and the FORD SHOP MANUAL you need is the 1991 Engine/Emissions-Diagnosis Volume H Car/Truck Shop Manual. Volume H is used for troubleshooting. It however does not cover repairs and R&R questions you will need Volume A & B for these.
