I just bought a 1970 F250. It has a strong 460 in it and the body is in OK shape. The tranmission for some reason will not come out of drive. It's full of fluid. I've not had a chance to look at it, but would appreciate some areas I might check out. Also the manual steering wants to pull to the right, and its harder than hell to keep on the road. Other than that, the old gal seems to be in pretty good shape.
I don't know if this will help or not, but I noticed an adjustment on my C6 that was loose. It cause problems getting from one gear to another. It was a bolt on the lever comming from the tranny where the bar comes down from the steering.
for the steering, I'd start looking at all the connecting points for a bad connection, usually rust or lack of grease.
You can loosen up the steering box a tad with the adjusting screw and see if that fixes it, if it does that usually means the box is worn out and was over tightened.
