starting problem
My '97 psd has had a starting problem about 4 times, when I start it it acts like it is only running on 4 cylinders and will not accelerate. If I shut it off and start it again it runs fine. It is idling a little rough. I always run power service in the fuel.

Does it show a check engine light when it is not running right?
If so I would suspect the wiring for the glow plugs/injectors at the valve cover gaskets. If you remove the oil fill cap and detect a burned wiring smell in addition to the smell of oil it is another indicator.

Check all of the connections for your engine wiring harness, valve cover, harness coupler next to the fuse box on the left fender, IDM & PCM connections. Sometimes its a loose connection that gives intermitten problems.
