I have recently purchased a 1998 Expedition with 111,000 mile, the engine misses at about 2200 rpm I get no code in the computer. Has anyone use the Platinun 4 plugs on a 5.4L. Right now I am getting 11 miles to the gallons in the city indesperate cry for help here in Miami.
Yeah, I would do a Major Tune up.. Spark plugs, Pcv valve, air filter FUEL Filter <-- this one could help you the most along with the spark plugs,
I had the same problem, I did what I just told you to do, and Voila! Asunto Arreglado!
greeting
BTW go with the Motorcraft Spark plugs, Ive heard that the 5.4 wont accept anything else than that..
I am getting 14 MPG in my 2003 Xp EB 34.000 Miles. and 21 Highway @ 65 MPH.
Where is the fuel filter, and is it easily changed by a "backyard mechanic"? I am not great but can turn a wrench ok. I have 80k on mine and bought it with 65k, I think I should change the fuel filter, have changed all the other stuff already.
If you check the posts, missing seems pretty endemic for both the 4.6 and 5.4, either because of plugs or wires. New plugs every by every 50K always helps. With 110K, you should do everything the previous post recommends. You should also consider new plug wires.
Have the plugs ever been changed? The reason I ask is that if they were changed then the coil wireing harnesses were removed. Often, the plastic on the retaining clips is brittle and tends to break off making it possible for the harness to easily back off. If not, change them out with the motorcraft plugs and be careful when removing the COPs and fuel rail (easier job if you do). Also, check the water hoses on the passenger side above the coil packs. These tend to leak making the coil short out.
So I finelly got around to find a person in Miami that works at an Auto Zone that actually speaks english and knows about Fords... He is a Retired Factory Tech. As spark blugs goes he recomended the original motorcraft plugs to the Trition 5.4L. And he also recomended me to change the plugs every 100K and re gap them at 50K, if the wear is too big at 50k obviously replace them. Now I have an engine resitation/ vibration at idle speed and around 1500 rpm will do a plug change this weekend will let you know what happens next!!!!
Good Luck! It sounds like good advice but the plugs are a pretty time consuming endeavor for the home mechanic ( I did it once and have had them changed at the dealer the most recent time). For the money and the time, if one is going to pull them to possibly re-gap, it seems worth the money to replace with new. A previous poster is right about the wires really being coil over plug design. Check out other postings and they seem to have repeated problems after 70K-ish, with one or another going out and contributing to missing. At 100K, I had mine all replaced. They are a pretty sophisticated component that is always under use. To me, it seemed smart to replace them all. Our Ex runs like brand new and gets a solid 13-14mpg on average at 105K. Again, Good luck!!!
I have a 98 XLT 4X4 with a 5.4L and had the plugs changed at 121,000 miles. With a K & N replacement air filter as the only mod I am now averaging 16.5 mpg on combined driving. Just got back from a camping trip to the badlands in S. Dakota with a 7,000# trailer. Averaged 11.5 mpg for trip. I stayed with Motorcraft original type plugs.
I did crack my hood open this weekend witht he Haynes book and abret pulling some of the covers out I was cover in sweat and not even with a lausy plug out, so I will be taking my truck to a shop to get it done
I did take my truck to Ford to do a recal on my Break Speed Sensor and they said it would run for $330, and that is for the labor and 8 plug, when I asked how much more it would be to have the boots, that connect sthe blugs into the coils the guy said it would another $140. Therefor, I took it to this mom and pop shop down the street from my house; and they charged me $180 plus parts. Running the truck with NGK dual platinun. Truck runs great.
If you are thinking of getting the plugs done yourself keep it in mind that you will need to buy an o-ring kit for the fuel injectors and for god's and you own sake be very very very careful when you remove the injectors plug, for each latch that you break it will cost you $75.00.
My conclusion for peace of mind take the truck in to a mechanic.
About 3 months ago, a friend of my mom asked me about the spark plugs, I told her that I would be easy to change them, Oh my god, after 1 hour, and about all my fingers scratched, I had replaced .. hmm maybe 2.. the "Easy" ones, then.. my dad told me that he could do it for me (He's been a mechanic for about 30 years) I offerd him 50 bucks.... End of story. he did the job.. he didnt even mess with the fuel injector rails, we started at about midday, and we were done at 11;oo PM
and I say "WE" because I changed the Fuel filter, the cooland, and air filter, this was not an Expedition, it was a 2001 Ford f-150 withe the same 5.4 engine.
