Hi all, this is my fist post. Have any of you had a problem with a buzzing coming from exaust? It happens around 1,700 to 2,000 RPM, AFTER it has warmed up... The dealer has put 6 hose clamps on the heat sheilds on the cats.... noise is still there it has been in the dealer 2 1/2 of the last 3 weeks, and they can't find it. Hope someone on here has the answer. Good day to you all, Chopper.
That sounds exactly like the dust cover on the transmission rattling. It's a pretty common problem with the V-10's. The cover is on the transmission, facing forward, right between the transmission and bellhousing connection. Two bolts and the flimsy sheetmetal piece is off. You might try bending the plate, or shimming it a certian way to stop the rattle.
If you need more info, do a search down in the V-10 section of the forums, there is TONS of info to be had there!
Also crawl around underneath and shake and rattle anything you can get your hands on. Do this while things are cold of course. Common noise sources are exhaust hangers, crash pans, add ons like running boards etc.
One thing you might try is to have a buddy run the engine while you lie underneath the truck and listen for vibrations. Have him gently speedup and slow down the engine around the RPMs that you have the problem. A walkie talkie helps so you can tell him what to do and of course I assume you know enough to put it in park and block the wheels etc and not touch anything that is moving.
I had a very loud, buzzy noise from my exhaust too and it started right after I changed the Y pipe. when I took it back to the shop, they removed the cat and 3 strips of metal fell out of it. I don't know what those strips were for but, the sound is gone and nothing seems to have been affected by them not being there.
The buzz in mine would only show up at about 65mph when pulling a trailer. Took the inspection cover off the torque converter, cleaned it up and reinstalled it with a healthy dose of RTV. No more buzz. I have no idea why it didn't buzz without the trailer, but it was definately the cover.
Check the spot welds on the heat shield on the y pipe. A couple of mine were broke and caused a buzzing noise. I just cut it off and the noise went away.
I was under the truck with a rubber hammer and beat on everything, I could not make it buzz. Plus the dealer(it's still under warranty) put hose clamps, 6, on every cat. I called the dealer early today and told them of the trans inspection cover, they said it made sense, but still no response. By the way, I think Bill Brown Ford's service dept. is the best in the Detroit, they usually find the problem quick...plus they gave me a free rental car each time. Thanks for your replies, Chopper.
my heat shields on my v10 motorhome are rattling big time, anyone have experience in removing those things? The heat shield on the cat and also the section of exhaust going to the muffler... I can tap on it and hear it rattle. My truck on the other hand sounds goooooooooood!
while underneath the motie last nite, I think it's more the heat shield on the exhaust pipe between the cat and the muffler, I can move the heat shield and the pipe doesn't move. Looks like is was suppose to be tack welded on the ends. Does not look like it comes off with out removing that section of the exhaust. The cat heat shield however looks like it will come off no prob.
To fix the trans cover, they just put some RTV on it....it worked. For the heat sheilds, which wasn't my problem, they put a bunch of hose clamps on them...since they were not the original problem, I dont know if they would work. Seems like they would. You should have the shields on if you ever travel where the grass or weeds can reach the cat or muffler, to prevent fires I guess...Good day to ya's, Chopper.
