Pulling NP-435 4 speed...

I am pulling my trans to put in a new clutch and rear main seal. How do I get the shifter off the trans or do I have to remove it to take the trans out? Anyone have a write up on this? Any tips or tricks?

Thanks in advance

Oh and I have a Chiltons manual but it is really vague

Try the looking in the older models like the 73 to 79 forum, or even the transmission. It is a pain to get off and even bigger pain to get back on. Something like pushing down and twisting the shaft an 1/8 th of a turn to get it to disengage.

I think the cap that holds the gear shift lever on top of the gearshift housing, unscrews, but I'm not positive.

I know it does for my T18.

My 81 shop manual does say to use a "SHIFT LEVER RETAINING CAP TOOL", to unscrew the cap, counter clockwise, to remove the shift lever from the gearshift housing cover.

Hope this helps.

Edit: Looking at the pic, it does seem that the cap has to be pushed down and then twist off, unlike the the T18, which unscrews off.

There is a cap and it is kinda marred up... probably from someone taking it off before me. I will try to twist it off. Thanks!

Unbolt the top of the transmission and lift it up along with the shift forks.
Fairly straightforward. Realignment isn't too tough!
Change the oil while it's out.

Got it out All I had to do is push down on the retainer cap and twist it 1/4 turn CCW... did it by hand so it wasn't too tough. Thanks for the info!

8 Lugs- I have already drained it.... I will be changing out the fluid while it is out and throwing in some Lucus gear oil for good measure
