Transmission problems underload
Thanks.
You should probably drop the pan and inspect for particles and check the color of the fluid and the smell. Brown, pink, black and burnt are all bad. The fluid should be red and smell chemically. Normal particles are kind of like a teaspoon of pepper flakes in the bottom of the pan. Maybe you might see one or two small grain of rice size metal particles and the magnet should have a light coat of fuzzy grey deposits, none is better.
My 94 F250 460 that I used to tow had similar shifting problems. The fluid had overheated which made the seals hard which made debris float around the tranny. Had to rebuild the tranny.
The weak spots are the converter and I believe the shop told me the sun shell also tends to fail. 95 and newer trannies had several upgrades to address this problem.
Good Luck,

A decent rebuild won't be cheap. I told my shop to rebuild my 94 E4OD to be bullet proof for towing my 8,000# trailer. It cost me about $2500 back around 1999 or 2000? It included all the uipgraded components plus better clutch pack, upgraded valve body, heavier duty Sunshell and a shift kit etc. So far after about 40K miles of which maybe 12,000 is towing it works like a champ.
Yours will cost more or less depending on what hard parts(Gears sunshell etc) are worn plus how heavy duty you want it. I have heard prices from guys on this site between $1500 and $3500. An off the shelf tranny costs something like $700? if you can install it yourself.
Good Luck,
Jim Henderson
