New exhaust system needed. 1997 f150 5.4 SC

Well, my truck has been sitting for about a year now. It developed what I thought was a motor knock and I had it towed to ford to have in checked out. Ofcourse they told me it needed $7000.00 in repairs which included a new motor. They went on to say they would give me a dollar for it as a trade in. I told them where to go. I never did think it was the engine that was shot, so this weekend I got under it and started messing arround. Someone said to check the flywheel/toque converter assembly for loosness, it was fine. I then started rapping on the passenger side catalytic converter and heard something loose inside rattling arround. Decided to take appart the exhaust system (pain in the you no where). Finaly got it appart and inside I found a chunk of ceramic material ! Problem solved ! For a lot less than $7000.00. I started the truck up for a momment, it was loud ofcourse, but the knocking/pinging noise was gone, yeah! Now for the rest of the story. Looks like I will need a whole new exhaust system including cats. I live in So Cal nothern L. A area, so I know this is gonna cost me dearly. Anybody have any ballbark estimates for the cost of the complete setup ? The drivers side cat may be ok but I am not sure. Many thanks in advance.

It's really hard to say. Your best bet would be to go to a muffler shop with what's left of your old Y pipe and see if they can make up a new one. You could probably get by with 2 cats instead of 4. It would be cheaper than buying a new Y pipe from Ford. I have heard that they run $700 +.

Thanks for the reply lxman1. So there are 4 cats ?. It looked like there was, but the first chamber or cat was hollow when i took it appart. No ceramic material inside. I did notice the heat shields arround it that made it look like a cat. It must have discenigrated. (spelled wrong). As far as the y pipes goes, it s ok.

The front ones are actually preheaters to help the cats work more efficiently. But yeah, it should have had guts in it too.
