What is This?

I am getting fuel into my charcoal canister on my '96 F150 5.0. I think this is the only component that could allow this. It also may explain some other issues. What is its name and its function? Thanks

From what you are saying if it has electrical connections I would also say cannister purge valve. Is the truck idling running a little rough .This may cause that also if it is stuck in the open position.

on a related note and now that we know what it is. . . what do we do about it because . . .
I am getting fuel in the canister too. I can smell it in the cab and everything. it looks to me like some sort of return hose is missing. what do we do in this case? do we really need this canister? can it be blocked off? I've heard of people removing it. i have seen a fuel and what seems to be a water mix come out of one the hoses from the canister. everytime i slow down to a stop and the truck dips down at the nose i start to smell gas. please help

My truck is an 88 so the system is a little different but same principle. On the top of the fuel tank a hose goes from there to the canister in the engine compartment and stores the fuel vapour when the truck is sitting rather than emitting gas fumes to the atmosphere and causing pollution. Mine is passive meaning it does not have any electrcal solenoids so when my truck is running it is drawing the vapours in through the throttle body and burning the vapour.A hose or fitting must be broken for you to get the smell that strong or you have a leak on your fuel system somewhere. Small fuel leaks can cause a lot of odour but do nt show up as drips on the floor because they are so small.Yours has the solenoid so the computer makes a decision when to burn the vapour and opens the valve to purge the canaster.I am puzzed if you have raw fuel in the canister.Unless the system is not purging and the canaster is loaded up. Something to think about.Check the vapour hose from the tank. Maybe a clip has broken and the vapour line has dropped below the level of the tank and on a full tank of fuel it is somehow getting into the vapour line.

i think you might be right. this only happens when i am loaded on gas. right now i am near empty and i dont smell a thing. just to clarify, i smell it mostly or only when i brake hard or slow down at all to the point where the front end dips.

can i just bypass this system without a check engine light? i mean . .. can i just crimp the hoses from the tank and thats that? you said it has a solenoid? so theres something electrical there. does it report to the computer? how can i get rid of this problem? i have seen some canister prices. . . . uh uh . . NO WAY am i paying like 120 bucks for that piece of crap. help!
btw--thanks

It's OBD-II, so fooling it is more difficult to do. I would go to motorcraft.com, find the part for your truck, then see what other models the part was used on. You can then go to a junkyard and have a much better chance finding the part you need since it doesn't have to be vehicle specific at that point. I would think that would be much cheaper than buying from the dealer.

Are the two caps in place on the canister. Mine were not when I noticed the strong fuel smell coming from it. I got a couple from the boneyard and it seems to have helped though I don't see how as they are a vented cap but the smell is gone.

I initially thought the purge valve was my problem but nope. The bucking issue still exists.
