I scored a 89 F350 reg.cab 4x4 for $3,500 it looks great has 35's on it and runs good. It has a 460 C6 with 160k on it. So heres the problem, it has a ticking noise that is not an exhaust leak, it sounds like a lifter and when you just breath on the gas pedal it goes away. But today I was under there with the engine running and it was really loud and seemed to be coming from the torque converter/bellhousing area, I know sounds have a strange way of echoing through the motor and stuff, is it possible that valvetrain noise could be louder under the truck(hood was open) then up top? Thanks for reading.
Best guess - the aluminum separator plate between the engine and trans barely hitting the torque converter as it turns. Heard of that once before on a mustang.
the noise goes away when the throttle is depressed because the torque converter puts the flexplate under load. it is there at idle because there is no load, so everything just kinda flops around.
