Folks....1994 supercab 2wd Ranger driven by a young fellow learning to drive standard. Truck got stuck and it sounds like some agression with the shift lever and now will only shift into 5th and reverse. Truck is in Manitoba and I'm in Dawson Creek BC trying to coach repairs over the phone with my son.
Searching through past posts I'm wondering if it is some alignment problem under the shift lever?
Clutch works fine, he can shift into reverse and 5th.
I've asked my son to pull off the shift lever and see if there is anything obvious out of alignment. But neither I nor Ben knows exactly what we should be looking for!
It is probable that the busings or guide pins inside the shifter have broken apart. There should be a couple of plastic bushings underneath the shifter cover, along with a flat spring. If that's OK, there are a couple of pins inside the shifter turret that may be worn or sheared off. Any one of these problems on its own or in combination of others can cause the shifter to lock up or be very sloppy. Here's a website that outlines how to rebuild the shifter in these transmissions:
If it isn't in the shifter, then its probably the interlock mechanism that prevents the shift rails from engaging one than more gear at a time. If that's the case, you're looking at having to pull the transmission and removing the shift rail assembly to check for broken parts.
Thanks for the advice and the link to the shifter rebuild. I appreciate the drawings!
Not sure if this is an indication of something more than the shifter? Ben did take the shifter out, visually the parts look good. While shifter was out he checked the aligment of the 'rails' he found neutral and the rails line up III. He tried to shift gears using a screwdriver (or something inserted where the shifter would go) and still cannot get any gear but 5th and reverse. Sounds like the entire 'mechanism' has shifted to the left. He says 5th is about where 3rd should be and reverse about where 4th is.
I'd definately say its the interlock or shift forks then. The transmission will have to come out and the top of the case removed as an assembly to remove the rails and forks. With that out, the damage should be pretty apparent.
Thanks for your replies. I'm thinking we will try and hunt down a used transmission. Taking the tranny apart sounds like a bit more mechancial knowledge then we want to attempt over the phone and its along way to drive from Manitoba to BC in reverse!
