Please help me...I have an '89 F-250 4x4 with the tilt wheel (well......used to). I was driving it to the barn and the steering wheel dropped to the lowest setting (which scared the you-know-what outta me). Now it has no resistance going up or down. Before, It would stay at the top, bottom, and a middle setting ( It would go to an upper setting, but then dropped to the next setting). I just found this out. I have to go to a grad. party now.
Help me out.
Thanks in advance.
Pull the plastic off the column and look it over. I think it can come off from the bottom... There is a 'hook' with several notches on the bottom of the column that hooks into a pin. These notches give you the tilt settings. My guess is that the 'hook' or pin are broken.
My 91 does the same thing. It isn't totally shot yet but very close. I'm going to tear it apart tomorrow and see if I can figure it out.
Million Dollar Question: part number and source for that part?
Hard To Explain But A Lever That Is Held By A Spring Engages In The Notches In A Another Piece Gives You The Different Settings.sounds Like The Spring Broke Or A Clip Came Off.not A Bad As You Think.
This might sound dumb, but I don't know how to remove thhe plastic around the steering wheel column. I never worked on a steering wheel before. I removed the bottom plastic case thingy that is connected by 2 screws. I'm lost past that.
Thanks for the help so far.
If you remove the steering wheel you should see 3 or 4 screws holding the upper cover casting. Disconnect the wire harness that feeds the steering wheel and you should be able to remove that cover and expose the tilt mechanism.I cant remember if you need to remove the key lockset but I pretty sure you need to remove the turn signal switch. Once inside there is a large spring that keeps tension on the tilt. I cant remember exactly but there is two pins that keep it altogether. There is another lever that helps keep the tilt in the right location. It has clips and a spring also . Sorry the
information is sketchy but I did it a while ago. Take your time. I had never had one apart and managed to figure it out and fix it.It is not as complcated as it looks. There have been some previos posts on the topic .Worth looking at.
OK I got the steering wheel all torn apart and I found the problem....the pin that goes in the grooves of the adjuster thingy was busted, and the adjuster thingy itself was busted (all the grooves were broke).
I got the new stuff from my friend and now I cant line up the teeth on the key cylinder with the teeth on the ignition levery thing. I can engage 'em, but the key wont turn all the way back. I've been ****in around with this thing for over an hour.
please...need more help.
The last tooth on the round drive gear must engage the last notch on the upper actuator ,it is the piece that looks like a rack .That way you should get full movement so the ignition switch works properly.
When you mean the last notch on the rack, do you mean the bottom tooth.....or the top? Is the last tooth on the round gear acessible after turning the key 1 full revolution?
Thanks so far.
This is hard to explain. If the round gear is engaged halfway down the rack what happens in some situations you may be able to start but have no accessories or the steering wheel may not lock. The last tooth on the rack is the one closest to the floor side of the column as apposed to the steering wheel side.I believe there is a flat section on the round gear and that would be your first tooth starting point. Once you fool round with it i think you will get what i am trying to say. On mine it was in and out at least 5-6 times before I figured it out.
OK i went to the "stealership" and they wanted $300!!!! (i know , i said i got the parts from my friend, but they didnt fit right) So im gonna take the whole thing to my local salvage yard and they'll rebuild it for around $100, thats music to my ears.
Only one question...How do i take the whole shaft out? I took out a bolt that connected the shaft from the gear box thing to the cab, removed the braket holding it in place, and removed all the wiring harnesses, and now i can pull it in a little, then it stops. What is the next step?
Thanks
Did you disconnect the gear shift inkage in the engine compartment? Also there is 5-6 bolts under the carpet that holds the plate that holds the column to the floor.
