Complete overhaul...
I have an '84 F-150 with 5.0 2bbl w/ 4 speed auto. I bought the old girl a little less than a month ago for $500. She ain't pretty, either... body panels and parts from 3 different trucks. But, the tranny was recently replaced. Engine had 219,000 and smoked so badly that I know in the weeks that I had it I reduced the county's mosquito population by half. I was thinking of buying a new engine from HiPerformer with a 7yr/100,000mi warranty. The current setup is w/o EEC-IV which makes it fairly easy to work on. What tips can you guys give me for making the swap smoothly? And, what can I do to restore/improve on original fuel economy. I do very little heavy hauling but a lot of driving and need the added cargo room. Thanks in advance.

Oh, the engine is just the beginning... got to get the old girl back on the road first, though. Bottom end came apart on me last week driving home and I managed to get it home without locking it up or overheating it.

Get an MSD box if you want better mileage. An MSD or Mallory ignition will burn the fuel better than the stock ignition. A properly tuned carb will keep the truck really happy too. If you get a Holley or Edelbrock, follow the tuning procedures and be patient.
