Sand/Salt caster
so this is on the topic of plows, but does anyone have one of those Spreadcasters, or sand/salt spreaders on the back of their pickup. and how much area does one of those cover.
I've seen there are the huge ones that sit in the bed of the truck, and then there are also smaller ones and sit behind the tailgate.
Anyone know what sort of area they will do?

The area it does depends on alot of factors...First and formost is how big the hopper is...secondly will be what speed you have your spreader set at..I mean do you want to saturate the area or just spread it lightly....how fast are you driving...do you rememebr to shut off the spreaded everytime yopu reposition...there are alot of variables to what you are asking. I mean what areas are you looking to do? do you want a driveway or a small parking lot. As for exact areas...cant do it
THe biggest question to ask is this...If you will be doing this as your Job....how many times a night do you want to be filling the hopper up?? More or less IMO the size of the hopper is more of a convienience then anything else.

that what I thought, I mean while I don't mind filling the hopper constantly, I wonder how realistic that is.
basically I'd be looking to do small to medium driveways, and doing a light sanding.
I know I have some time, I'll keep doing my research too.

If you are just going to be doing driveways and such I would go with just a tailgate hopper. I mean most hold over a cubic yard of salt which is not too shabby. Now on the other hand...the full bed ones do also offer the advantage of the extra weight which will help in plowing. Only problem with them is that they also hold alot more salt then might be necessary so you could end up being stuck with alot of leftover salt/sand in the hopper.
Just for your info I work for a Transportation company and during snow season the trucks the send out on snow duty have nothing more then tailgate hoppers. ANd they have alot of locations and area to salt. I mean it is really your call but if it was me and I was just doing driveways...I would get the tailgate Hopper...Plus it only takes one person to remove it.
