Solid Overdrive Light

Although I am still a new user and have posted very little I have received more help from this forum than I could ever explain. I read almost everyday and have had to post very little b/c I am generally proficient at searching for solutions to my problems. This case is different however. Being away from home I am on a very slow dial-up connection and am having a very hard time seeking the solution to my problem. Thank goodness for cell phones and laptop computers.<O</O

My overdrive light came on pulling a long steep grade on the way to our weekend vacation destination. It’s not a flashing overdrive light. It is a SOLID OVERDRIVE LIGHT. Truck was unloaded.

The truck is running and shifting normally. I still have overdrive and if I push the overdrive button the transmission still downshifts. But the light remains on even when in overdrive. I’ve checked fluids and tried resetting the computer by disconnecting the batteries. I don’t have any way to pull codes.

What does the solid overdrive light mean and what should I do to fix it? I am really worried about my truck and need some brotherly advice.

I would think that you have a short in the shifter.A wire grounding itself out.
If im wrong someone else will chime in.

I think you might be right about the short in the shifter. I went outside and pulled the overdrive switch out of the shifter. When I put it back in the overdrive light wasn't on. As soon at I put on the cap to button it up the light came back on. Wiggling the button makes the light kinda flicker. The button still works and I can turn the overdrive off, but it is very sensitive and if it's not in there just right the light come back on and stay on.

I'm feeling alot better that nothing serious is wrong but the light still bugs the $*%@t out of me. Gonna find a new switch and see what happens.

Thanks for the input. Hope new switch is the fix.

It might not be the switch itself, the break in the wire might be in the shifter itself. Were the wires go up to the switch.

I just got done tearing into the steering column and shifter. I didn't see and worn or cut wires. I cleaned and reseated all connections and put everthing back together and it gone. The button turns the overdrive off and the light come on but my problem seems to have been resolved for the time being.

Thanks Green_D for the suggestion.
