I just started tearing the 460 down that came out of a jetboat I just bought from a buddy. It's stripped down to a shortblock right now, with the front cover off, and the cam bolt removed. I can't get the gear off to save my life. Is there something I'm missing? I've done alot of cam swaps on SBC's, but this is my first Ford, but there shouldn't be anything keeping the gear and cam from coming out. I can't even rotate the cam any..and there's alot of slack in the chain. Any ideas?
once you have the cam bolt out, you basically have to rock the gear off the cam, it's an interference fit. The reason the cam won't come out yet is under the cam gear there is a retaining plate that is held to the block with 2 small bolts so get the gear off then remove that plate, then I usually lightly bolt the cam gear back on for a handle to hang onto for pulling the cam out.
I used a small prybar. If I'd thought about it, I had my 3 jaw puller about a foot from the motor. It finally came off, I wasn't worred about the gear b/c I'm going back with a gear drive. Oh, and there were a couple of scarred cylinder walls, one pretty bad from a broken top ring, and something like a piece of sheetmetal jammed bewteen one of the rod caps and the crank..no clue where that came from, and the good old chocolate milkshake when I drained the oil
