I keep getting the P0401 code for insufficient egr flow. I have replaced the DPFE, the vacuum solenoid and the egr valve. I also cleaned the mating part of the intake where the egr bolts on, cleaned the egr tube and replaced the 2 rubber hoses going to the DPFE. I have good vacuum to the solenoid and the vacuum line going to the egr looks fine. Any ideas on what I might have overlooked? Btw, it is a 1999 ranger, 2wd with the 3.0 and auto. I have just done a complete tune up and it runs great otherwise.
I believe there is an orifice in the manafold, below where the EGR mounts, that must be cleaned of carbon, to have it work properly.
This orifice is often over looked, so if you missed it, when you removed your EGR for service, perhaps it's worth another look, seeing as how you still have the code after all your efforts.
Another thought, have you tried erasing the code after the work, if so did the CEL then come back on????
I am using my SCT from my Superduty to scan and erase codes. Also, I disconnect the battery after installing anything. I will pull the egr valve and look for this orifice. I am going to clean the electrical connections too. Whenever the cel comes on, it always lists p0401 and p1000. Is that normal? Thanks for the info.
Hey PAWPAW, thanks for the tip on the orifice. I was able to clean it with a pick from the egr side and blow out quite a bit of stuff from the throttle body side. One large piece looked like an old piece of gasket from a previous owner's attempt at fixing it. The problem seems to have gone away. I just bought the truck for my son, at a good price, and now it is slowly gaining my confidence for dependibility. I guess the thing to remember about egr system codes is to clean everything possible before replacing things. I spent about 150 bucks but that will be insurance against future problems. lol
Spares? Heh, anyone want to buy a brand-new Motorcraft Electronic Ignition module for an 1981 Escort? Heh. Still on the shelf.. had the infamous 'breaks down on warmup' pickup coil in the dist.
