does SD design make things hit the windshield more?
i have had my truck since november, done drove it 27k miles, and jeez, it seems like more stuff hits my windshield than on my 1995 f350. my SD even has a crack now in the window.
i can recall only 3 times something has hit my window in my 1995 f350 putting 166k on it, i have lost count on how many times rocks have flown up and smacked into my 2004 f250.
does anybody else notice if their truck does the same?
i am thinking its the aerodyamics of the truck or my imagination or just my run of luck on it.

Now that you mention it, my 99 F250 had to go to the windshield doctor for chip repairs more than any vehicle I ever had before. Had a new one put in it also when it got beyond repair.
My truck has one of those things that go across the hood... think they're called a bug shield. See my pics below to see what I mean.
It seems to do what it's supposed to... I can see things blow right up and over the windshield riding a wall of air that the shield creates, so it seems to do it's job for the most part. Still get the occasional rock chip and grit my teeth every time. I try to always leave plenty of distance between me and the vehicle in front of me... not only for safety, etc. but to give the rocks a chance to settle before I get to them.
I think you are tailgating getting ready to pass that slower vehicle (super duties always leads the way) and rocks gets thrown your way. No way to avoid this problem.
Nice truck Ryan!!!!!!!!!!! I think I'll get one and see if it helps. The issues I've had though are bouncing rocks from tractor trailers. Being up that high you catch them rather than having them fly overhead.
Yesterday after work, 3 miles from home in normal stop and go traffic, a 1" rock hits the window and started a 6 way break, three inches in dia. My windshield is toasted. I won't fix it right away cause this thing catches way to many rocks. After I replace the window, probably after summer, I will get glass coverage.
This rock is the hardest I've ever been hit. Sorta like someone throw a rock, which is funny because I had good distance and no lifted trucks in front of me. Only little cars. I kinda gave myself whiplash trying to get outta the way!
i have a bug shield, my 1995 didn't, i never tailgate, heck, i am an extremly cautious driver actually, i don't even know where the rock came from that caused the crack!
My situation seems to be just the opposite of yours. Seems like the design of the truck pushes everything over the windshield. Don't have to clean the bugs off like I did on my 2000 Dodge.
I recently had to replace a window on another car. Turns out to be much less than I expected, only $200-$250. Didn't bother with insurance. Do a google search on Auto Glass to find the same company.
Windshields can last 20 years or 20 minutes...........luck of the draw. I had an 86 Camry for 16 years, sold it with the original windshield, not a chip in it.
When my 1975 F250 was two years old a dump truck pulled out in front of us and a rock the size of a 5 pin bowling ball hit the windshield in front of my wife's face. I was on the brakes so the impact was maybe at 10 MPH my speed but it punched a hole in the window and sprayed my wife with glass crystals. Thank God, she wasn't hurt but to this day I am wary of dump trucks.
Also the upright configuration and swept area increase the chances of being hit. The rock that hit me flew right over the top of two cars. I have seen this before. Too high for a car and just right for SD.
I also think the part of the country has a lot to do with it. In Az we have lots of rocks near roadside and washes that spill out onto the roads. Small rocks get carried around and dropped off and kicked up again.
I have found that the frequency with which I hit rocks with my windshield is directly proportional to how new the windshield is (the newer it is, the more rocks that hits it). Once it has a couple dozen chips and a good crack running directly through my line of vision, the amount of rocks I hit decreases dramatically.
