What Would You Do????

I have a 2006 F-150 Lariat, which I have had for about a year now. I went through the bad 6.0 strech and had my 04 SD bought back. I love my 150 but there is just something about the diesel that got the blood going. I was offered 35,000 for my truck, which would put me in the market for another SD. I went to a couple of dealers in the area and I can get an 06 Lariat supercab 4x4 FX4 with all the goodies for 39,000. The sticker on the truck is 47000. I am a little leary of my bad experience with the 6.0 and was wondering how they were or should I just wait and see what this 6.4 is all about. Is there a link where the new body style can be seen. What should I do. The 2007's I saw still had the 6.0 in them and they were 50,000. The 0% finance makes the deal that much more inticing. Not sure what to do. HELP

Thanks, Sarge

Sarge, as excited as I am about the upcoming intro of the 6.4 I am doubly anxious and concerned about the impact the new fuel specs, particulate filters, afterburners ...etc... will have on overall performance / reliability.

I mean, if not for the EGR strategy and it's down stream impact on other components, the 6.0 likely wouldn't have had any more issues than one could reasonably expect on a high tech engine design.

With that said...If I was in the market, I would pull the trigger now. JMHO though.

Good luck.

I'd get the 06/07 6.0 not only for the great motor but more for the awesome body style

I would be hesitant to get the new 6.4 until after the first two full production years and give it chance to work the bugs out. Of course, this is my opinion on all new introductions whether it be gas or diesel and was my approach with the 6.0. It sounds like the 6.4 is pushing the new technology envelope and there's bound to be some growing pains. Also, the 6.4 will require the new ULSD fuel and it will be a while before the fuel distribution system gets completely converted to the new fuel. In the end, you may be repeating your experience if you get a new 6.4 early in its production. IMO, most if not all the problems with the 6.0 have been worked out at this point and it's a pretty reliable engine at this point. If it were me, I'd go with a 6.0. However, it's ultimately your decision and I could be wrong. Just thought I'd throw my $.02 out there.

i agree. if u go to the 6.4 fourm they have all kinds of pics of the ugly beast. ints shameful. not to mention all the new emission requirements that are gonna plauge this new engine. also, i know about 12 people that have 6.0's and only 2 have ever had serious problems. both 03's. 5 of those 12 are 2005 or 2006. and they are all problem free. mine is a 2006 with 3000 trouble free miles and i love it. i would save the money and get your diesel fix now!
keep it ford

Thanks for the replies. Keep them comming. I will have a company truck in the next year or two so i could stick with my 06 f-150 for a while and order a new Ford when the time comes. There are some good eals on the 06's now but I am not sure if I am ready to give up my low truck payment for a high one when I will not be driving it a whole lot for the next 8 or so years.

I'm patiant. I'll wait a few years to see how the 6.4L or any other future engine does. I just hope it's a reliable powerplant.

Yeah I am too. Like I said I will have a company car to drive in the next year or 2. I will have that for 9 years so I have all the time in the world. I love the F-150 very nice ride and it tows my Grand National great and gets about 15 mpg doing it. So I am really in no hury to get rid of it. Unless they do some great deals on the leftover 06's.

Why would you get rid of a truck like that? Nice ride, tows what you have well, and gets good mileage doing it. Wish my 2000 F150 was like that. You're not going to get much more MPG with the diesel.

If I was not going to make my own biodiesel, I would be getting a Crew cab, 6.5 foot bed F150 from what you've said.

Sarge: you also mentioned you wouldn't be driving it much for the next few years. If I understand correctly you were talking about the truck if you get it. One thing diesels don't like is to sit around unused for extended periods. Diesel fuel is some nasty stuff that doesn't take well to sitting for very long. Additionally, the turbo on the 6.0 has been prone to corrosion buildup that causes problems with the movement of its variable vanes. Many turbos have been replaced for this reason. At some point a redesigned turbo was introduced that was supposed to resolve this issue but I don't know exactly when it was introduced and if it's on production trucks now. If you drive it practically every day, then it shouldn't be an issue either way. Just wanted to throw that out since you sound like you're trying to decide what to do.

As for me, I don't tow much. Mine's basically a daily driver but also serves as the family vehicle. I'll be driving her almost every day and putting between 22-25k on her a year. Traded my 2000 V10 SD in on her while I still had some residual value in the old beast. Don't get me wrong, loved my V10 and never had a problem with her. But was looking for better MPG, longevity with the miles I drive, and didn't want to sacrifice room by going smaller. Haven't regretted getting getting the PSD yet, but reading this forum sure scares me from time to time.

Yes, I probaly wouldnt drive it as much as you do. when I had my 04 6.0 it was an early build and when it was bought back it had about 7800 miles on it. It was about a year and a half old by the time everything was all said and done. I loved the truck and when the 6.0 ran good it was a beast and I was getting about 17-20mpg when driving on the highway. I figured with the 0% and the overstock of 06's up here it might not be a bad idea. On the otherhand the F-150 is very nice and I Love It. I still havent made up my mind but if I do anything I will be getting a crew cab, which I dont have now, and i will stick with the Lariat package.... or maybe i will put a Roush S/C on it. Still undecided.
