I've got a flex-a-lite fan on my 86 F-250 and it flows more air than the stock fan, so no you don't NEED one, but if you have A/C, it's a good idea to have a fan clutch.

I think all '80 -'86 originally came with fan clutches. Those without factory air may have centrifugal clutches while those with air have thermostatically controlled fluid drive types. Look on front of fan hub, if its got a clock spring looking device then its the thermostatic type, if not then it's the centrifugal type. I know the thermostatic type can fail in the "locked" mode (I had one) but mostly they either slip excessively, won't lock or the bushings wear out.

Being in Wisconsin, you could probably get by without one.

No, not all of them did.

At least from 1980 to 1982...

If you had a 300I6 engine without A/C or one of the optional cooling packages, you got a standard small radiator, and factory flex fan.

The Fan clutches were an option on certain cooling packages, such as extra cool and super cool packages in at least 1981.

Very easy to convert to a Clutch Fan however. Buy a Clutch and fan, remove the spacer and Bolt on etc...
