Flathead filter can leak?

I have a 1948 337 ci flathead in my F-7 truck. The original filter canister was leaking. It was replaced with another used filter canister. This one is leaking also. The top cover seal is not leaking. The leak is somewhere on the bottom. The leak could be comming from the lines, drain plug, or crack somewhere.

Is this a common problem on the old flathead filter cans???

Generally, no. In addition to the joints you mentioned that might be leaking, you might check for a cracked feed or return line. My best guess would be that you have a buggered up fitting on one of the lines - since both canisters leaked. Any chance a prev owner stripped the threads?

Drainage out of the filter is by gravity, so something must be pretty obviously cracked or loose for it to leak any significant amount. The fitting on the bottom should have a gasket/washer to the body of the filter.
