The exhaust has nothing to do with the engine not starting. It is absolutely not required.
Are you sure the spark is occurring at the right time? I am not familiar with that particular engine, but I am guessing it has magneto ignition.
Also, a little know fact: An ignition system that indicates it is functioning properly by generating a spark outside of the combustion chamber may not be functioning adequately to create the voltage necessary to jump the gap across a compressed air/fuel mixture. It takes far less voltage to jump open air than it does to cross the compressed a/f mixture. First thing I'd do is put in a set of fresh plugs and double check the ignition timing.
brand new plugs. the ignition is 2 individual coils on the side of the block, with 2 wires, one for each coil comes from under the starter shroud. one more thing, im not using the oil mixer. im running mixed fuel in it.
dont know what happened, but i got ambitious today, gave it a pull, it sputtered. gave it another pull and some throttle, and vroom she was screamming. the clutch grabbed a bit, and thank god it was up against somthing. i had to lean the mixture up a bit, but she runs like a champ. opened up the throttle and itll sit there and smoke off the tires. thanks guys.
its kinda ghetto right now. my welder is out of commision, and im outa acetylene, so most progress has stopped. the seat is getting reapostured, and ive got mounts for the tank, i dont think the zip ties are too safe. i ordered new brake and throttle cables for it, and i have to get a new belt, as i accidently shreddded this one on a test run on the stands. ive got a vid of it running, but no way to post it
yeah the belt was kinda a pain getting on, i loosened up the engine bolts and tilted it to get it on there. i think it will be nice once i get some time and some money to finish it.
as some others said--after setting--you probably had flooded--and setting solved it--but--as another said-you may have weak spark also--should be blue--not white--or red--or yellow--as he said--wont fire under compression--

Cool project!!!! Thanx!!! I'd love to do a dune buggy type of project like that. Unfortunately with me though, it would go just lke all of the old Mercedes, the Thomas bus to RV conversion, motorcycle, and other projects do around here.
