I had the catilytic converter changed but I still get a rattle at 2500rpms??? I m wondering If the plugs I put in (NGK- iridium) could be the problem? Anyone know or have a simular problem>??????????
From what I've read in here over the last few years regarding NGK's in the 4.0....it's a no-no. I would go back to the appropriate Autolite plug for your application.
Put Motorcraft or Autolite plugs back in it; I used Bosh once and my Explorer knocked like yours, changed back to original equipment plugs and it cut all of that out. Run some injector cleaner through it every 4th or 5th tank also.
Hey guys just wanted to say thanks for the replies as it has helped me a lot. I will do that asap. I also was wondering as people have been tellin me that I should go to synthetic oil????I dont want to but can this really help my rattle at 2500rpms>>>????
I just bought my explorer and it had the oil changed. Should I change the oil to somthing better??? I think they probally used the cheap stuff??Anyone have any good suggestions????
Oil is like politics and religion. Myself, I prefer clean dino oil so I use a name brand of oil and filter and change them every 3-3500 miles. Synthetic would be rather expensive under these circumstances.
*The subject of oil is sure to bring all sorts of thoughts and ideas.
**Do you have the SOHC engine and did it rattle before changing plugs?
Yeah Cowboy it did rattle before but it wasnt as noticeable???They were motocraft plugs and they looked okay. I put in NGK iridiums for 02 explorer 4.0 sohc v6 vin E. I dont know what the heck it can be ??? the rattle comes and goes, it seeems as if the warmer the engine the less you hear it. But now I notice it is only occuring @ 2400rpms. If I rev higher just to 2500 it is gone and if i ease of it disappears????but if I hold it on 2400rpm it has a rattle all the way!I had the dealer put a new catilytic on but it didnt fix the rattle???How do I know they even put one on>>???can I check easyily???But yeah I am really confused and just want this rattle to stop! Now I even here a ticking sometimes but its very faint. I need some replies to make some sense of all this? Could this be carbon build up or is it something major like the cam tension or time valves???? I read a post about how people have had to replace guides, jack shaft, etc. and is exspensive!!!!Cowboy do you think you can help????
Well, do you have the SOHC, and if so, has the timing chain issue been addressed? An OASIS printout should show this. As for the "new" converter, the metal should be shiney.
The wife had a 2002 Explorer with the 4.0L SOHC motor. It developed the infamous timing chain rattle somewhere around 40,000 +/- miles. It was worse when the engine was cold at first. But as time went on the "rattle" lasted longer. It's expensive to repair and last I heard Ford still used the same crappy, prone to fail, parts as replacements. She dumped the 2002 and got a 2005 EB 4.6L V-8 Explorer during the "employee's pricing" period. The pricing was too good to pass up for the 2005. Especially considering what the 2002 would cost to repair, only to fail again. The ironic thing is the 4.6 V-8 gets almost the same mpg as the 4.0 V-6 and has a lot more pep .
