The Factory IDI's never had aftercoolers. (or intercoolers as they are sometimes called)

Given that the IDI turbo's only boosted to 7 psig, an aftercooler has little effect. A PSD on the other hand runs 20+ psig boost and an aftercooler will provide a tremendous power boost.

The aftercooler cools the hot air comming out of the turbo and feed it to the engine. By cooling it, the air gets denser and hence more air enters the motor which in turn allows the motor to produce more power because it will run at a higher compression ratio.

For a factory turbo on a 93 or 94 IDI putting out 7 psig the cost of an aftercooler system (probably about $1,000) outweight the benefit.

If you are willing to spent the money to get a few more hp then go for it.

If you are going to turn your fuel up and turn your turbo boost up the the aftercooler becomes a necessity to keep your exhaust temps from melting your pistons.

Seb....
