Alternator problem?

I have an 87 f-150 300 CI. When I start the truck, the ammeter reads in the red discharge zone. The lights are dimmer, the turn dignals slower, etc. After 5 or 6 miles, the gauge jumps up to the normal charge zone, everything brightens, and all is well.
The problem is that it is taking longer and longer for the change to occur after starting. I'm guessing the alternator, but I thought I'd check here first. Any ideas? Thanks!

I think that your '87 alternator may have an externally mounted voltage regulator. If so, I'd check that first.

Also check that all of the electrical connections from your alternator are corrosion-free and properly tightened. Older vehicles can drive you nuts troubleshooting a poor electical connection.

I'd start by cleaning the battery terminals, checking the cables for corrosion, cleaning all the grounds.

If the problem is still there, most auto parts stores will test the alt for free
