Because they improved the design over your 7.3's bottom mounted spin on filter. The top mounted 6.0 cartridge oil filter setup is an absolute thing of beauty.

That still doesn't tell me why.

Few things that make it nice:

Less time under the truck on your back

It's right out in the open, very easy to unscrew and then put back (Zero obstructions in regard to getting a wrench on it)

Zero oil spillage / runs, drips or errors

Oil change on the 6.0 is CRAZY easy, and if you put a fumoto valve on the oil pan it's absolutely the easiest and cleanest oil change you do on any vehicle made.

Does that help?

Cause it's a hell of a lot easier to change up there than crawling under your ride to get covered with hot motor oil?

There are several reasons they went with the cartridge filter up top. First of all, by putting it up top you can get right to it. There's no reaching around underneath or going around the frame or (ouch!) the exhaust pipe.

Another plus with the design on the 6.0 is the fact that when you unscrew the top cap on the oil filter, the oil inside drains back down into the engine and out your drain plug. That means a whole lot less mess. The filter stays attached to the cap when you pull it out, which means all you do is put a pan or rag underneath to catch any stray drips. The 7.3's spin-on filter contains about two quarts of oil in it, and when you loosen it some dribbles down the side. This leads to slippery fingers, and before you know it you've dropped it on the ground and made a mess. Lots of people grumbled about it.

The new filters can also handle more flow, so I am told. I know cartridge filters sometimes seem like a step backward, but I actually like the setup on the 6.0 better than the 7.3. These trucks are the easiest of the big horses to change oil on in my opinion.
