When my F100 had a 360, I installed a set of Hedmans and 2.5" exhaust. Best thing I ever did. More power and great sound were the result. Oh, and that was with a tired 360.
My uncle is a Ford truck guy and also said headers were a waste of time. He was wrong.
Talk to some people who have done it and listen to them. I think if you do it, you'll like it. I sure did.

Rusty70F100, what header do you recommend?
I decided not to go with headers because so many people said they aren't worth the trouble for the small amount of gain they give. I have heard that if I can get ahold of a couple of old 428 Cobra cast iron headers that they are the shiznit.
headers was the single best mod I did to my truck. Just look at the manifolds for an fe and make up your own mind of they are restrictive or not. I think the bendable straws from mcdonalds would work better.

Which Hedmans did you go with? Did you have to raise the motor to install them? I've heard that on Full-Length headers you have to almost pull the motor to get them installed.

You dont have to move the motor. What you may have to do, is find the correct steering position so the linkage isn't in the way. Also, get creative. You will have to turn 'em around and twist things around to be able to get the headers in there. It's not easy, but like it said in the Hedman instructions: IT WILL GO ON.
I saw someone around here say to remember to get the aluminum header gaskets. The hedmans I'm looking at come with the ball and socket collector. Is that good or bad? It seems like it would be better, but I've never run them so I can't really even guess. It looks like they don't use a gasket at all. Any advice on this?
I have a set of aluminum sandwich type gaskets between the heads and headers on my Ranger and they're well worth the extra cost. With a ball & socket collector you don't need collector gaskets
I didn't think it looked like they needed gaskets with the ball and socket type. I'm just curious if the ball and socket collector is better than the flange type collector. I know hedman seems to think they are better, but I'd expect that.
That's what's on the FPA headers I have in my 68 Merc. They've been on there 3 years now and I've never touched the collector bolts since I put them on the car. I can't say they're any better than a 3 bolt type though, those you rarely have to touch either. I suppose if you're going to frequently take em on and off, the ball and socket would be better, but if not, I don't see where one's better than the other.

I want to say they were the 89180 headers. I do recall having to wrestle them into place and I think I did lift the motor a little to slip them in.
one more thing. I got the painted headers. I was told that the pain burns off in the first few minutes of use. I sandblasted and painted mine with 1500 degree BBQ paint. Several months have gone by and they still look great.
I'm planning on paying more for the HTC coating. I'm told it is well worth it in the reduction of under hood temps. I'm not concerned about the looks at all.
I have one more question. I'm planning on running 4 feet of straight 2.5 inch pipe back from the headers to some turn-downs to get me around for a week or so until I can get the truck into the exhaust shop. Will this be OK except for the noise? I don't want to risk screwing up this motor now that I finally have it back together.
