94 Ranger 4.0L pushrod, 4WD auto trans...I've put lots of work, time, and money into this recently purchased truck. (But I got it for next to nothing). Now it's leaving a six inch spot of trans fluid on the driveway after I drive it. It looks like it's coming from where the bell housing bolts to the engine. The truck sat for a long time before I bought it. Does anyone have experience with replacing the input shaft seal? Any other ideas where it might be coming from?
I've tinkered with just about everything on this truck (and others) except I know nothing about transmissions (other than changing filters). Any ideas would be appreciated.
Pretty sure...it has a reddish tint to it, although it's darker than it should be. It cleans up real easy on the driveway too. At first I thought it was engine oil, and I replaced the valve covers due to wetness around them. It might be residual, but I've driven it about 100 miles since the valve cover job. The leak is still there.
First off -- How many miles? I have the same truck & it was doing the same thing. After highway driving it would leak from front seal. There is a bushing that the converter rides on that goes bad and causes the seal to leak.
I tried seal conditioner & a new filter, It worked for awhile but soon started again.
I have 187,000 miles on mine so I had the tranny rebuilt & upgraded & Remaned torque converter and everything is working better then ever.
I would suggest going to your loccal tranny shop & get prices on a rebuild befor it goes completely -- not cheep! but prices vary.
