2 days ago, I noticed my left turn signal indicator was blinking rapidly. Next time I used it, it acted normally. I pulled rear light as the brake light (left) was not working. Front signal blinks rapidly. Fiddled around with the plug and bulb, and it worked again. Now it doesn't work all the time. I added some dielectric grease and a new bulb, but it still doesn't work. I noticed there is a connector at the rear with nothing in it, that I figure goes to the trailer connector that isn't there. I do have an electric brake controller under the dash, and it lights up when I step on the brakes.
Does this sound like the MFS? Or maybe just a cruddy connector? Right side and 3rd brake light are OK.
The wires are marked grnd, major, & minor. The running light works. The connections looked fairly clean. I will break out the VOM and start poking around.
Did you change the rear bulb?
If you didn't, change it.
Sometimes the filament is broken and bounces around as you drive, so one time it works and the next time not.
I found the problem. The wire that goes to the left turn/brake light has a jumper that goes to the trailer connector. I presume this would have the same function on a trailer. The wire insulation was split slightly about a quarter inch before the plug that connects the body harness to the taillight harness. Right before that (forward) is the aforementioned splice. The wire was broken inside the splice, and fell apart as I was poking at the split. I had previously checked voltage at the taillight plug, and there was only 3v. That is what made me look more closely at the area around the body connector. I added a temporary jumper around the connector which fixed the issue. It's looking like it's gonna storm, and it's also getting dark, so this temp fix will hold me til Saturday when I can come up with a permanent solution.
