The surge (1500rpm, 2000rpm) for about 10 sec is normal. It should then go into high idle (1200rpm) and settle down to 750 once the engine is warm. You can help the computer along through the cycle by reving the engine a couple seconds after you start it. I find it will settle down sooner, especially if it is summer. As far as dying, get and OBDI scanner from autozone ($30) and see if it will pull some codes (check engine light). It is highly likely that your IAC (idle air control) valve is gummed up. Buy a Haynes manual for your truck. Take off the IAC valve and give it a good bath on the inside with DEEP CREEP. Thats a good starter for you. If you are unfamiliar with procedures or terms I used, do a "forum search" on them for more details.
